Today's listed on our local Councils calendar
as one of the 2 annual verge pick-ups
aka 'throw out ya dead' or 'free treasure trawling'
up & down & around the street there's been piles of stuff
accumulating & growing for at least 2wks
because everyone knows
one womans trash is anothers treasure
and as soon as you put something on the verge
there's a fair chance it'll get snavelled
we woke this morning having forgotten to do our duty
didn't take long though to assume our own significant pile of non-essentials
and as fortune would have it
being late early this morning
meant the serendipitous fairies of accumulated junky treasure
were smiling on me
because there unceremoniously tossed in amongst a smallish pile of crap
on the neighbours verge
was glorious treasure
an intact, solid-as, rustified original very vintage Metters Fire Grate
that I [might] need
and you never know when you'll need another gate!
bringing more treasure into our lives
when we are desperately trying to wrap our heads around what to do with the stuff we've got
did seem illogical
however it didn't take me long to reason
that for every 5xthings I put on our verge
it was okay to bring 1xthing in from someone elses....
I have really struggled the last couple of weeks not to collect from the verge! I can *so* see the potential in those old doors (and one up the road from me with lovely, yet peeling, panels still in it!) as a HEADBOARD....but I keep myself restrained by reminding myself that sanding and painting such treasures would NOT be easy (or enjoyable) with a three year old "helping"!

ReplyDeleteWe don't have verge pick ups so no opportunity there to collect more treasure. Love that grate, it is perfect. Glad you gave in and brought them home, I think you would have regretted it if you hadn't. xx
ReplyDeleteSadly we don't have "hard rubbish" collection out here in the country but it's a fabulous thing in the city and yes I have been known to partake under the cover of darkness because you get in BIG trouble other wise because it's called stealing from the council!! Great finds for you, I want to see and know more about your fabulous path, are they tiles or plates?? Have a great day

They were broken bits of ceramic plates & bowls created by & gifted to me by my friend Rebecca Cool which I used in strategic spots when we paved. I'm not sure how we will retrieve them before the demolition crew do their thing....but will try!
