New Zealands darkest day...

The Christchurch earthquake reached our kitchen in Perth yesterday morning, as news filtered in via tv & radio. Now we hold our breath and wait for the days to unfold, revealing the horror & utter devastation as the toll on lives & communities soar.
(Image: Herald Sun - see the guys with their thumbs up!)
Mother Nature sure is pissed off, having reeked unparalleled havoc in the Southern Hemisphere constantly for months now - coming back for a second swipe at Christchurch in as many months only this time with catastrophic results.
The NZ Prime Minister said that this could possibly be New Zealands darkest day, I think that day is yet to come.
What seems to be evident, as I watch & listen from my home a million miles away, is that humanity & the Kiwi spirit will win in the end, as all that are able pitch in to rescue, feed, clothe and shelter the thousands of residents & tourists left injured, stranded and traumatised.
Makes me sad & proud to be a Kiwi!

Now I'm going to kiss my kids, tell him I love him, and find out where I can give blood - more often!

  1. I don't know what to say! I am struck dumb by the utter devastation of a beautiful city and at the same time in awe of the rescue workers. Mel

  2. Oh Jody, i think we are all very shocked and worried about whats going on in the world but when it hits the place we call home or the place of our birth it makes it all the more harder to comprehend. My heart goes out to all the people and families affected aswell as that beautiful city and country that will never be the same.
Im as proud to be a resident of Australia as i am to be a citizen of New Zealand. Today i sit on the fence and mourn and celebrate the Aussie and Kiwi spirit xx Kelly

  4. Mel - it's hard to put your thoughts into words when you're numb with shock - I can't even begin to imagine how Canterbarians are coping right now.

Kelly - when you see the horror images flashed across the t.v of utter devastation and hear of the hundreds of aftershocks that are still rocking the city you know they've been knocked to their knees and it's going to take a lot to get back on their feet - can't see that anything will ever be the same.

Kylie - hope your mums packed her hard hat! After seeing the state of the place & people I would be giving it a wide berth unless I'd plans to help in the soup kitchens.

When I asked my Grannie years ago if she believed in God, she replied "No, I believe in Mother Nature.

    Thanks for the comments.
