One of my pet hates is sewing for the sake of it
sewing samples to be filed as a reference to go back to should you ever want to
sew a straight line, curved line, insert in a zip, create a button hole,
and those samples sit in a file
in a drawer, back of the cupboard, top shelf
waiting....
it makes a whole lot more sense to learn techniques by creating projects which are
useable or wearable
I've discovered over the years of teaching
that if your sample is something you would love to possess
then you'll make it & make it well
a whole lot more sinks in when it means something
Rennae is the perfect example of this....
Rennae arrived at the Studio with little to no knowledge of sewing at the beginning of Term 1
and is now sending me photos of her latest project
a favourite top we created a pattern for
Not the easiest of garments to create being that it is self lined & fully reversible
however during the 8wk Term Rennae formed a relationship with her sewing machine
discovered what they're both capable of
and developed the confidence to keep sewing beyond the Studio walls...
which makes me very happy!
To everyone that continues to sew and stay in touch with photos of their latest garments
thankyou.
psst - while I'm at it I'll also put my hand up to not understanding
art to wear - it never looks like art or very wearable to me
and what do you do with it once the show's over....
Love this top! Is the pattern available?
ReplyDeleteUnfortuntely Julie not possible - the older I get the more ethical I get and as much as I don't mind helping indivduals copy a garment they have purchased [in the case of Rennaes Top hundred of dollars] on the proviso it wont be sold on.
