As of yesterday we no longer have a teenager living in the house.
To celebrate Elizas significant birthday I offered to take her shopping.
She's not an Op shopper or the slightest bit interested in sewing
I can't explain it
her idea of a shopping good time is checking out shiny new things in a large shopping centre
so that's what we did
all day.
Arriving at 10am
and leaving at about 2pm.
95% of the time was spent trying on boots
smelling perfume
and trying on more boots
with plenty of other stops along the way.
At Typo I discovered tissue pattern wrapping paper
which I wasn't tempted to buy
however with a trip East coming up soon
I was tempted enough to purchase this Morgan & Finch Dressing Gown.
It's a fact that I don't buy anything new without considering its REinventing potential
just like you'd consider where you would wear something before buying it
I consider what else it can be
- immediately I could see this in various incarnations down the track.
It was lovely to spend the day with daughter
however after a few hours of walking,
sitting down was a priority
- I probably could have done without the baked riccotta & blueberry cheesecake
but that pot of tea saved my life!
There were plenty of interesting observations made during the day however the most illuminating for both of us was on the trip home.
Walking around a big shopping centre is exhausting, physically & mentally
and for a lover of second hand worn chipped & used things, big bright shiny & new is soul destroying.
One of the things on Elizas shopping list was a Doona Cover -
we looked at Myers & David Jones along with a couple of other specialty shops
and knowing like I do that Op Shops are a wonderful source of such things
I baulked at paying the over a $100 they were asking.
Somethings you have to buy new and Doona Covers aren't on that list.
After hours in that shopping centre it was imperative that I make an Op Shop stop on the way home
to realign my internal compass and make everything right with the world again.
Surprise Surprise - I found the perfect Doona Cover, with slips for $20
- it's a KS and she requires a QS
so I will do what I do with larger covers and make it fit.
This got me thinking about
Op Shopping vs New Shopping
- there's certain things I wont buy second hand and others I'll scour Op Shops or Ebay for before considering buying new....
are you the same - what's on your list?!

hate the shopping centre and will do anything to avoid it. The last time we went shopping for a bicyle helmet and it was the most miserable family time. Op shop, ebay first, then other online stores. Well done on finding a doona cover, I don't think I've ever seen one I liked at the op shop.
ReplyDeletesometimes the service in those lovely big shopping centres is dismal and so too the experience, then the loveliness is all gone. I love online, love op shops cannot beat the experience, love ebay and love making things. The latter being not so great, but I am learning!
ReplyDeleteI will always go to the Op Shop,Second Hand or shop on Ebay first for just about everything. Like you I find shopping centres exhausting in every respect. If I have to buy new I usually go online and find it cheaper and in far more comfort than heading to the shops. Thankfully my daughter is the same but the boys all like new and shiny. x
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Eliza, hope you had a great day
ReplyDeleteWell done Jody for braving the shopping centre, I hate them except for the shoe shops!
I'm with you. There's just no fun unless you're hunting for second hand treasure!
ReplyDeleteHi there, just popping over for a visit. I love my op shops and have bought most of my things second hand, even bras! I don't think I'd buy knickers, baby items such as bottles and dummies or infant car restraints. I'm always a little gobsmacked by the price of things in shopping centres...after going 2nd hand so long it can be a real eye-opener!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your big girl.....I think you deserve a mother of the year award for a day shopping in a major shopping centre. I chose op shopping any day. xx
ReplyDeleteAnd what about the food courts!!!!???? Bleughhhh!!! I do a lot of online shopping too,and op shopping. But yes you do need to try on shoes usually, went to the David Jones sale last week, at least most brands are all in the one place and you don't have to go to multiple shops!!Cheers,Debbie
ReplyDeleteMy sis and I were just sAying the other day how generic and blah the op shop pickings will be ten years from now when they are flooded with so much nasty mass produced boring stuff and when the interesting vintage stuff is hard to find. Look around at sheets and towels for instance. So plain so bland. We are noe on a mission to find the pretty and interesting jacquard towels and printed sheets. I'm not scared of used towels in good condition. Nothing hat detergent sun and fresh air won't fix, but I'm not keen on used undies.
